Hythe Fields Gospel Hall, a small unassuming church on the corner of Thorpe Lea Road, could easily go unnoticed to passersby. And yet it is one of the oldest buildings in Egham Hythe, full of history and character. It was built in 1897, the year of Queen Victoria’s 60th Jubilee, at the request of Mrs Nicholson, the wife of the Vicar of Egham Parish Church. A great church beneficiary she was responsible for building four other Gospel Halls in the area. These were at Old Windsor (now Old Windsor Methodist); Staines (New Road); Englefield Green (now Bishopsgate Evangelical Church); and Stroude, Virginia Water (now converted into a house). For over 100 years this small and often overlooked building has been used to serve the local community. In particular the church has always welcomed local children and young people and has had a thriving Sunday school and youth group, which many of the long standing residents of Egham Hythe will have attended. The Sunday School teachers were responsible for many outings and events for underprivileged families. The building itself was also put to good use during the Second World War when it was used as an extra classroom for the Hythe School, which had become overcrowded with evacuees from London.
Over the years the members of Hythe Community Church have prayed for a building of our own that could be used as a permanent base for God's work in the local community. In 2010, and in His amazing timing, God answered that prayer for us. The leaders of Hythe Fields Gospel Hall decided it was time to move on to new exciting ventures and asked if we would like to take over the license and running of the Gospel Hall. Although we continue to hold our sunday services at the Hythe Centre, the church building is already being used for our midweek prayer, Tuesday Tots, Freedom Youth and Prime Time groups. This is just the beginning as we look forward to what we will do next...
